RESOLUTION
TO SUPPORT TRANSGENDER ANTI-DISCRIMINATION LEGISLATION
WHEREAS,
the National Organization for Women (NOW) has worked for the elimination
of all forms of oppression in our society targeted at groups who are
systematically mistreated; and
WHEREAS,
the Transgender and Transsexual Communities confront the same gender
system that oppresses women and therefore are the same target of
marginalization, loss of medical care and economic and civil rights; and
WHEREAS,
the National Organization for Women (NOW) has a policy on combating
oppression of transgender people; and
WHEREAS,
the National Organization for Women (NOW) has resolved that NOW advocate
and work for the inclusion of sex, transgender people, and gender
identity and/or expression as protected categories in legislation
currently before Congress and in future legislation protecting civil
rights; and
WHEREAS,
NOW-NJ has consistently supported transgender inclusion dating back to
1994; and
WHEREAS,
a bill (A3678) that would amend the Law Against Discrimination to
include protection on the basis of “gender identity or expression”
has been introduced in the New Jersey Assembly.
THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED, that NOW-NJ:
Supports
legislation to add "gender identity or expression" to the NJ
Law Against Discrimination;
Lobbies
for a companion Senate bill to A3678;
Acts
to achieve passage by both the Assembly and Senate;
Works
to ensure that it becomes the law of the State of New Jersey.
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that
the NOW-NJ Lesbian Rights Task Force makes passage of this legislation a
priority issue.
