Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

National NOW has an extensive FAQ list, with answers, that can be reached by clicking here.  Below are some of those questions and answers, modified where appropriate with information specific to New Jersey.

What is NOW?

NOW stands for the National Organization for Women. NOW is dedicated to making legal, political, social and economic change in our society in order to achieve our goal, which is to eliminate sexism and end all oppression.

What does NOW do?

NOW strives to:

  • eliminate discrimination and harassment in the workplace, schools, the justice system, and all other sectors of society;

  • promote equality and justice in our society.

NOW achieves its goals through direct mass actions (including marches, rallies, pickets, counter-demonstrations, non-violent civil disobedience) intensive lobbying, grassroots political organizing and litigation (including class-action lawsuits.)

What are NOW's official priorities?

NOW's official priorities are pressing for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that will guarantee equal rights for women; achieving economic equality for women; championing abortion rights, reproductive freedom and other women's health issues; supporting civil rights for all and opposing racism; opposing bigotry against lesbians and gays; and ending violence against women.

Why isn't NOW working on my issue?

At the chapter level, NOW is an organization of volunteers.  While most members support all of NOW's goals, each member only has the energy to work on one or a few of the priorities mentioned above.  If you have an issue you would like to work on and that issue is in line with NOW's priorities, join your local chapter and spearhead work on your issue.

Where can I find a list of abortion providers?

Local phone directories list providers, and Planned Parenthood and the National Abortion Federation can make referrals. Also see Ann Rose's Abortion Clinics OnLine

How can I contact NOW?

NOW-NJ's address and phone numbers are below.  In addition, individual chapters in NJ can be contacted from the chapter list.

How can I start a new chapter?

If there is no local chapter near you, you might consider starting a chapter in your city or on your campus.  Contact NOW-NJ's president to start a conversation about this.
