NOW National Conference Report
by Susan J. Waldman
One of the highlights of the conference was the forum for Democratic
Presidential Candidates Carol Moseley Braun, Howard Dean, Dennis
Kucinich, and Al Sharpton. Comedian Elayne Boosler did a terrific
job moderating the discussion. I want to share some of the
candidates' statements.
Carol Moseley Braun
"I have vowed to work as hard as I can to take the 'Men Only'
sign off the White House door."
President Bush's "No child left
behind" initiative is, in reality, "Leave no poor child a
dime."
Howard Dean
Regarding Domestic Violence, "We all care
about Homeland Security - what about Home Security?"
Dennis Kucinich
"Poverty is a weapon of mass destruction."
Al Sharpton
His comment when he is asked if he and the
other three candidates present can hurt the [Democratic] party,
"The party doesn't control the House, the Senate, the White House,
the Supreme Court, how can we hurt the party?"
"If it was up to the [Bush]
administration, women wouldn't have the right to blow their noses."
"Human beings have the right to decide
who they want to marry."
"The Christian Right needs to meet the right Christian."
