NOW-NJ State Conference
By Mavra Stark, Morris County NOW, November 9, 2003
On Saturday the 8th, Morris County NOW hosted the NOW-NJ State Conference at Morris County College.
It was a big hit, thanks to the hard work of Shirley Henderson, Susan Waldman and also, I have to say, myself.
And many thanks to Susan Siegrist, who put the conference journal
together. Several Morris County NOW members were also there to help: Nancy Critchley, Nancy Durec and Nina
Suraci.
We had terrific speakers, Jenny Brown of the Redstockings of the Women's Liberation Movement and Candi Churchill from The Women's Liberation Healthcare Task Force; and Martha Livingston from the Physicians for a National Healthcare Program.
The entire day revolved around the issue of national healthcare.
Elizabeth Volz, who was reelected State President by acclamation, ran a very successful resolutions session in which five important resolutions were passed with only minor friendly changes.
The resolutions were, very briefly, to support incontinence education; to advocate for a lower rate of Cesarean Section; to advocate for a State healthcare program as an interim measure before national healthcare becomes a reality; to join the Women's Liberation Healthcare Task Force; and to educate the public on the plight of Lori Berensen and urge President Bush, President Toledo of Peru and Colin Powell to use all reasonable measures to get her out of prison in Peru.
There were anti-Choice demonstrators marching with their usual colorful posters on the street at the entrance to the college.
We had found out before hand that they were going to be there, and, thanks to them, we had good coverage from our local daily press.
We also had vendors with wonderful merchandise: bumper stickers and buttons, handbags, soaps and aromatherapy items and feminist literature from the Redstockings and also Pandora Book Peddlers with Pam
Sheldick.
There was a very good spirit at the Conference and the feeling that we were really accomplishing good things.
The chapter made money on the Conference, too. All in all, it was successful in every way it could be measured.
Thanks to all for coming and making it a success!
