March for Women’s Lives
Action Update
March 31, 2004
Only 25 more days until the March!
Official March Kick-Off at the Armory!
The DC Armory will be JAMMIN the Saturday before the March! There will be volunteer trainings throughout the day on Saturday, April 24th from 10am-6pm, followed by the Official March Kick-off event that night from 8-11pm. The Kick-off will consist of VIP speakers, performers, celebrities, vendors, and information tables. There will be snacks provided as well as a cash bar (no alcohol). Admission is $20/person. The Armory is conveniently located less than a block away from the Stadium/Armory Metro stop on the Orange and Blue lines, and there is also free parking.
There will be vendor tabling both during the daytime volunteer training and the evening Kick-off. Tabling prices vary depending on organizational status (profit or non-profit), and prices are slightly lower for those who would like to display literature-only. Food and drink cannot be sold or given away. To be a vendor, download the form from
http://www.marchforwomen.org or contact
lgalib@marchforwomen.org or (202) 349-3838 for more information.
ASL Interpreters
There will be ASL interpreting for both the morning and afternoon rallies. If you are coming with a registered delegation, make sure your delegation leader indicates your interpreter needs on the online delegation form. If you are hearing impaired and need access to ASL interpreters but are not part of a delegation, please contact the March Office as soon as possible at
lgalib@marchforwomen.org or (202) 349-3838 so we can make the necessary seating/standing arrangements.
Special Needs Seating!
For those who are physically challenged and need seats on the trolley and at the rally, we are ordering our first round of trolleys by the end of this week and need your information now! If you are part of a registered delegation and need a seat, make sure your delegation leader indicates your needs on the online delegation form. If you are not part of a delegation, please email
lgalib@marchforwomen.org with your name and contact information or call (202) 349-3838 to make seating reservations.
Last Call for March T-shirts!
Due to DC regulations, T-shirts will NOT be sold the day of the March on the National Mall. It is highly recommended that you pre-order your shirts with the order form on our website as soon as possible to ensure that your shirts arrive in plenty of time before the March. Just go to
http://www.marchforwomen.org and click on “Order March T-shirts.” If orders are not placed in time for the shirts to be shipped, they must be picked up at the DC Armory on Saturday, April 24th between 10am and 5pm.
Register your Buses Now!
Coalitions and Delegations - Register your buses at http://www.marchforwomen.org/users/busreg.php! This form must be filled out for each of your buses, unless you have a group of buses leaving from the same location with the exact same itinerary.
Pre-order Metro Farecards!
Riding the Metro subway is the easiest way to get around Washington, DC. Paper farecards are required for entry into the Metro system. You should order your Metro farecards in advance, especially if you are arriving by bus or car. Remember to order extra for last-minute group members: if one person has to buy their farecard at the station, it will hold up the entire group. Try to order by April 4th to ensure that your farecards arrive in time.
To order, visit http://www.marchforwomen.org/content/index.php?pid=79 and read the entire page. You can pay by check or by credit card, just click on the appropriate link. Please note that there is almost no parking available near the National Mall, and many streets will be closed for the March route. For more travel-related information, visit
http://www.marchforwomen.org/travel.
Volunteers Needed for the March Weekend!
Many seasoned Marchers say it is more rewarding if you work as part of the March, rather than just be a participant. Volunteers are needed for the entire weekend, April 23-26! If you are in the DC area during that time, you can play a critical role in the success of our events. Volunteer jobs include:
Rally site set-up assistance (starting Tuesday April 19th – Sunday, April 25th)
Events on Friday and Saturday: set-up, breakdown, and staffing
Help make the March happen on the 25th – Parade marshalling, greeting buses from out of
town, providing help and directions to participants, assembly delegation formation, rally site facilitators, staffing of volunteer and Lost & Found desks, assisting the physically challenged, signing up the crowd for the official March count, and clean up.
Breakdown of the rally site (Monday April 26th)
No experience is necessary, but experienced facilitators are greatly encouraged. We will provide training and support.
There are also jobs for volunteers who have prior experience or training in the following areas:
First Aid
ASL interpreting for the deaf and hard of hearing
Media or press assistance
We can use you for all or part of the day. If you are coming with a delegation, we can arrange your schedule so you’ll be able to volunteer and still march with your group.
If you or anyone you know is willing and able to help, please contact Linda Lawson at
llawson@marchforwomen.org or call (202) 349-3843. Thank you for caring enough to be a part of this historic event.
Website Update
Bulletin Board – A reminder that we have a bulletin board available to all users on the March website! This board will help you get information on the march, and talk with other people who are coming. Discuss travel and lodging, get ideas on organizing, and much more!
Still need information on getting to the March, and what resources will be available once you get here? Check out our Travel Guide –
http://www.marchforwomen.org/travel. The list of hotels and hostels on our Travel Guide under “Some Places to Stay in DC” has recently been updated, and many of those hotels still have available rooms for the March weekend.
Meetup Reminder!
It’s never too late to get involved with your local Meetup, and with less than a month until the March we need as many local organizers as possible! If you participate in Meetup, organize your Meetup into a delegation for the March. There will be two more Meetups before the March on April 6th and April 20th. Learn more about Meetup and review the next Meetup agenda on the March website at
http://www.marchforwomen.org/meetup/index.php. You can register online to become involved and vote for your Meetup location at
http://marchforwomen.meetup.com.
Amtrak Discount Available to All Marchers!
Amtrak always offers a 20% discount to groups of 20 or more people. As a new promotional offer, Amtrak now offers a 10% discount off the lowest available fare to Washington, DC between April 22nd and April 28th, 2004 for anyone traveling to the March. To book your reservation call Amtrak at (800) 872-7245 or contact your local travel agent. Be sure to refer to Convention Fare Code X89C-917 when making your reservation. This offer is not valid on Auto Train. Fare is valid on Metroliner and Acela service for all departures on weekends only. Offer valid with Sleepers, Business Class or First Class seats with payment of the full applicable accommodation charges.
We appreciate your comments and suggestions, and we thank you for your support. This March would not be happening without you. Keep up the good work, and keep organizing!
