Save the Supreme Court Rally - Thursday

Where: Trenton, State House, on the Steps

When:  THIS THURSDAY, July, 21st, 2005

               12:30 pm – 1:30 pm

Who:  National Organization for Women of New Jersey

NARAL Pro-choice New Jersey,

Planned Parenthood of New Jersey,

Women’s Fund of New Jersey

Why:  In protest of Supreme Court Anti-Choice Nominee John G. Roberts

Details:

President Bush’s nominee to replace Justice Sandra Day O’Connor is a disturbing one.  Judge John G. Roberts was only appointed to the DC Circuit Court in 2003, less than 2 years ago.  Before that, he served as a clerk for Justice Rehnquist.  His record, in the little time that we have had to research it, is disturbing:

·        As Principal Deputy Solicitor General during the first Bush administration, Roberts played an active role in efforts to limit abortion. Roberts argued in a brief before the U.S. Supreme Court that “[w]e continue to believe that Roe was wrongly decided and should be overruled. [T]he Court's conclusion in Roe that there is a fundamental right to an abortion ... finds no support in the text, structure, or history of the Constitution." (1991)

·        as deputy solicitor general for the Bush Sr. administration, helped craft a policy that barred doctors and clinics receiving federal funds from discussing the possibility of abortion with their patients.

At only 50 years old, Roberts would be affecting United States Law for the next 3 to 4 decades, and his staunch conservative stance warns us that a Supreme Court under his influence would take a drastic turn backwards in civil liberties.  It is crucial that we are present on Thursday to voice our support for a comprehensive, determined, and thorough review of Judge John Roberts in the confirmation process.  Please consider being there on Thursday.  If there was ever a day to take off work, ever a day to show the power of the pro-choice community, ever a day to demand the preservation of civil liberties, that day has come.
