Environmental Imperatives Explored at Bergen Community College:
Journalist and Author Elizabeth Kolbert Headlines Women's
History Month Celebration

A focus on environmental concerns and the possibilities arising
from new Green initiatives will be addressed at Bergen Community
College as part of their Women's History Month celebration,
which focuses on the theme “Women Taking the Lead to Save Our
Planet. The month-long series of events features an illustrated
lecture Field Notes From a Catastrophe by renowned journalist
and author Elizabeth Kolbert on Monday, March 9, 2009 at 11:45
a.m. in the Anna Maria Ciccone Theatre, 400 Paramus Road,
Paramus.
Elizabeth Kolbert has traveled from Alaska to Greenland and met
with distinguished scientists to learn about the debate
surrounding global warming. She has been a staff writer for The
New Yorker since 1999 and has profiled leading political figures
including Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Mayor Michael
Bloomberg and former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. Her award-winning
three-part series in The New Yorker, Field Notes from a
Catastrophe: Man, Nature and Climate Change became a
best-selling book , chosen as one of the 100 Notable Books of
the Year in 2006 by The New York Times Book Review. Her stories
have also appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Vogue and
Mother Jones. Kolbert received a bachelor's degree from Yale
University.
Women's History Month Calendar
Thursday, March 12, 11:00 a.m. - Join four of New
Jersey's most noteworthy women poets, Penny Harter, Therese
Halscheid, Priscilla Orr, and Madeline Tiger, as they read
from their selected works, in which nature plays a
significant role in people's lives and relationships. The
four poets have each been recipients of the New Jersey State
Council on the Arts awards and fellowships. They have also
been honored as Dodge Poetry Foundation Fellows and have
received numerous other prizes and recognitions. The
poets will also conduct a workshop at 2:00 p.m.
Friday, March 13, 7:30 p.m., Anna Maria Ciccone Theatre
- Liadan, a musical group comprised of six talented Irish
women, honors both Women's History Month and St. Patrick’s
Day with a concert full of traditional and unique song and
dance. Liadan's presence captivates audiences throughout
Europe and the U.S. with their vocal and instrumental
celebration of time-honored Irish music. Tickets for the
show are $24 for general admission and $22 for students and
senior citizens (65+
Wednesday, March 25, 1:45 p.m. Dr. Barbara Brummer,
a lifelong conservationist and state director of The Nature
Conservancy in New Jersey, will discuss The Case for Nature:
Protecting the Lands and Waters We Need to Survive. In 2008,
Brummer received the Women and Wildlife Leadership Award by
the Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey. A
question and answer session will follow the discussion.
Sunday, March 29, 3:00 p.m., Anna Maria Ciccone Theatre
The Palisades Virtuosi is an extraordinary chamber music
ensemble. Their concert celebration consists of music
composed only by women. Nationally known for its commissions
of new works for flute, clarinet and piano, the chamber
music ensemble will also include the world premiere
performance of a work by New Jersey composer Melinda Wagner.
Palisades Virtuosi has been delighting metro area audiences
for five years and they have released three CDs. Tickets
for the show are $14 for general admission and $12 for
students and seniors (65+).
Bergen Community College is a public two-year coeducational
college, enrolling more than 15,000 students in Associate in
Arts, Associate in Science, and Associate in Applied Science
degree programs and certificate programs. More than 10,000
students are enrolled in non-credit, professional courses
