Neuwirth died Sunday, July 22, 2007, at Robert Wood Johnson
University Hospital, New Brunswick, She was 77.
Born in The Bronx, N.Y., she lived in East Brunswick for 36
years, before moving to Monroe, where she had resided since
1997.
She received a master's degree in education from Rutgers
University, New Brunswick. Prior to retiring in 1991, Mrs.
Neuwirth was an educator for the N.J. Division of Human
Services, Trenton, for 20 years.
She enjoyed traveling and had visited almost every continent.
She worked tirelessly championing women's causes in the early
years of the women's movement. She was president of the National
Organization for Women-NJ in the 1970s and the East Brunswick
Political Caucus, and had served on the Brandeis University
National Women's Committee. She was a member of the East
Brunswick Board of Education from 1969 to 1972. In later years
she also worked with AARP on issues relating to the elderly.
She was predeceased by her husband, Sidney Neuwirth, in 1997,
and a daughter, Caryn Gordon, in 1988. Surviving are a daughter,
Marion Van Derveer, and her husband, David, of East Brunswick;
and a brother, Charles Steinberg, and his wife, Gayle, of
Mellville, N.Y. She was a devoted grandmother to Daniel and his
fiancee, Andrea Bredin, and Joshua Van Derveer. Also surviving
are a niece and two nephews.
Funeral services will be held today (Tuesday, July 24) at 11:45
a.m. at Mount Sinai Memorial Chapels, Cranbury Road at Evergreen
Blvd., East Brunswick. Interment will follow at Washington
Cemetery, South Brunswick. Memorial contributions may be made to
